About Me

Let me tell you a little bit about myself...

I began my tutoring career while studying for my MA at the University of Derby. Whilst there, I worked part time as a study advisor, which was a role within the Study Skills Centre at the university. I really enjoyed my time there, helping students who were struggling with the essays and dissertations. So, after I completed my masters degree in 2015, I carried on working as a one-to-one tutor, this time working privately and from home.

"Chris provided my son with very helpful tuition. Our son was struggling in Year 12 and seemed to be on course to drop out of the A level. With Chris's help, he stuck with it and achieved a Grade B, despite all the Covid restrictions and school closures that impacted this cohort of young people. I believe that Chris not only helped to restore our son's confidence, but that he also provided important help in how to approach studying in general, which undoubtedly fed into his other A level subjects as well. Importantly, Chris helped our son recover his confidence in his ability to study and so has helped him to move on to university"

At first I taught students in Computer Science as I knew a lot about IT and computer programming from my hobby as a programmer. Then, as I learned more on my PhD in Communication, Culture and Media Studies, I realised I had more of a leaning towards teaching English and Creative Writing. Some of the most enjoyable sessions I’d had teaching people IT skills and Computer Science and helping them become qualified were when I assisted them in coming to terms with how to write essays and tackle the tricky problem of answering terse exam questions and dissertation topics. I found that it was helping these students overcome confidence barriers in presenting reasoned arguments and compiling structured answers which was most pleasurable and rewarding, so I switched to teaching English and, after successfully completing my PhD in 2023, that's what I've been doing ever since!

Proven track record

Many of my students have gone on to great success after my tutorials. A lot of my teaching is about imbuing a sense of self-confidence. Once they achieve the qualifications they had hoped for they can take with them a life-long feeling of self-belief backed up by excellent results.

One-to-one lessons

We all face points in our lives when we feel we could benefit from some one-on-one help. It's a matter of knowing that asking for help isn't a sign of weakness but a positive step to achieving one's goals. All my tutorials are undertaken in confidence, away from the student's regular academic environment and ensuring the best possible learning environment.
